Verify a national flag's orientation from an official government or recognized national source before mounting it. Product thumbnails, search snippets and remembered emoji are convenient references, but they are not the authority for the current design or display direction.
Identify the exact flag first
Record the country or organization, the design version if relevant, and the product in hand. For example, India Flag - Durable Polyester National Flag - 60 x 90 cm identifies a specific national flag product; it does not replace an official orientation diagram.
Read the official diagram in four parts
- Top edge: note which symbols or color bands belong at the top.
- Hoist side: identify the edge intended for attachment to a pole or support.
- Front view: confirm the diagram's stated viewing side.
- Vertical display: look for separate official guidance rather than rotating the horizontal design by instinct.
Run a paper-arrow rehearsal
Place removable paper arrows marked TOP and HOIST beside the flag while it lies flat. Stand where the audience will stand and imagine the final mount. If the back will be the main visible side, confirm how the design should appear from that viewpoint.
Orientation card: Flag identity · official source URL · top edge · hoist edge · front-view note · final display photo.
Check the completed display
Step back far enough to see the whole flag. Compare it with the saved official reference, not with the packaging image. Also follow applicable local rules and the official source's guidance for respectful display and handling.
If the flag belongs to a larger collection, Peace Day Flags: Plan a Conversation, Not a Ranking offers a way to preserve identification and story information without turning flags into a ranking.
